Greg Gardner Wins A Seat On Council

In the District of Squamish Councilor by-election on June 24, 2006, Greg Gardner, local businessman and community leader, won a seat on council by a large majority.

As a twelve-year resident of Squamish, Gardner cited his passion for the community as a key factor in his decision to run. He is very excited about Squamish's future and as a councilor now intends to commit his time to dealing with the challenges and opportunities the community is currently facing.

Gardner believes we must respect our heritage while moving forward with well-balanced development that includes residential, commercial, industrial, park and natural habitats. He is concerned with the manner in which the publicly owned ocean front property is being developed.

Gardner feels growing the businesses already existing in Squamish can increase employment. He sees value-added forest product businesses, the film industry, port related industries and the tourism sector as elements in achieving economic diversity.

A graduate of UBC, Gardner has a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and a Law Degree. He practiced law in Vancouver for seven years prior to moving to Squamish. Family PhotoIn 1994 he purchased his automobile dealership business and moved to Squamish with his spouse Lila Gaudry and their two sons. He is the founding President of the Squamish Community Foundation, Co-Chaired the Olympic Bid Task Force, is a director of the West Coast Railway Heritage Association, Past President of the Squamish Rotary Club and he has been instrumental in completing Rotary's international projects in Guatemala. As a result of his community work, he was named Business Person of the Year in 2004.

Gardner's varied educational and professional experiences will be an asset for Council. "I believe the relationships I have developed over the years with a wide cross-section of our community will allow me to build bridges and help guide the community in a respectful and inclusive manner."
